Introduction
What is People First?
We are an organization made up of self advocates who are people with disabilities speaking up for ourselves. It is about creating change for people with disabilities that will improve our lives.
The first self advocacy group for people with disabilities in the world started with eight people living in a group home in Oregon in 1974. They were tired of being seen just as "disabled". One person shouted, "We are People First!" The group then decided that should be the name of their organization.
This self advocacy movement now has thousands of members in every state and in many other countries. People First of Georgia has 20 active chapters and close to 600 members in Georgia! (see Appendix A for list of Chapters).
We are unique in that People with Developmental Disabilities have an active role in membership and leadership in this organization. Our members have all types and labels of disability.
